Saturation Diving Resources

Saturation diving developed by the Navy in the US, permits divers to remain at underwater at high pressures for weeks or longer without having to often undergo decompression. US Navy research discovered that when a diver is underwater for a long time the time needed to decompress reaches a stable and maximum point. The diver becomes "gas saturated" and his body tissue no longer accumulates additional gas such as nitrogen or helium.

For this reason decompression time for divers who have been underwater for one day is almost the same as for divers who have been down for a week or more. When divers operate in the saturation mode they effectively live underwater working from a diving bell or other underwater pressurised facility. They remain underwater usually for a week or more.
